Brief fund description: 

Ariel Appreciation Fund seeks long-term capital appreciation. The fund normally invests 80% of assets in equities with market capitalizations between $2.5 billion and $20 billion. It may invest the balance of assets in debt. The fund seeks environmentally responsible companies; it may not invest in issuers primarily involved in the manufacture of hand guns, nuclear energy, or tobacco. Prior to Sept. 6, 1994, the fund was named Calvert-Ariel Appreciation Fund. Funds that have merged into this fund: Washington Area Growth Fund on Sept. 16, 1991; Calvert Capital Value Fund on June 12, 1992; and Ariel Appreciation Fund C on Dec. 8, 1994.
